Endoform® is a proprietary extracellular matrix (ECM) biomaterial containing a rich and complex mix of important biological molecules, including structural (collagens I, III, IV & elastin) and adhesive proteins (fibronectin and laminin), glycosaminoglycans (heparin sulphate and hyaluronic acid) and growth factors (FGF2 & TGFß).
Cells and the surrounding ECM constantly interact to modulate tissue physiology. ECM components play important roles in regulating tissue growth and maintenance and orchestrating the process of tissue regeneration. The delicate micro-architecture influences the way cells attach, migrate, grow and differentiate. Structural proteins such a collagens and elastin support cells as well as binding and releasing growth factors, cytokines, peptide fragments, proteoglycans and glycosaminoglycans. Collagen and elastin also act as substrates for matrix metalloproteinases (MMP’s) and elastase.
Importantly, as a cell-free native extracellular matrix, Endoform retains authentic structure, signals and substrates providing a uniquely supportive environment to guide the growth of cells and new tissue.
Endoform demonstrates quantitatively superior vascularization, rapid cell infiltration and improved modulation of matrix metalloproteinase activity compared with current market leaders in a range of preclinical studies and this is known to influence the rate and quality of tissue repair.
Endoform is a building block that can serve as the underlying architecture for a wide range of medical devices. Our proprietary fabrication technology provides flexibility to develop constructs with profiles and performance to suit a wide range of anatomical sites. It can also be combined with complementary polymer, signalling and cell technologies to achieve specific functional requirements.
Endoform is derived from ovine forestomach and includes a unique combination of basement membrane remnants and propria-submucosa. Its unique structure results in a dense contoured matrix on one side and an open smooth matrix on the other. It is conforming, robust, and has high tensile strength. By careful control of the manufacturing process we retain the propria-submucosa’s innate biological structure and composition. Additionally, the ovine source combined with New Zealand’s disease-free status and our proprietary purification and sterilization processes aim to ensure the highest level of safety.
When applied or implanted clinically, Endoform immediately provides a supportive function. It allows the attachment, migration and growth of mesenchymal cells and, in time, is replaced by new tissue to provide a functional tissue analogue. It is well tolerated and does not elicit a significant immune response.
